Statement of Speaker William J. Howell Regarding Virginia’s Unemployment Rate Hitting a Three-Year Low

RICHMOND, VA – Following yesterday’s announcement that unemployment in the Commonwealth has dropped to a three-year low of 5.8 percent, Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) issued the following statement:
“Yesterday, federal employment data indicated that the unemployment rate in the Commonwealth dropped to 5.8 percent, the lowest rate since 2009. This is a positive sign that Virginia is on a positive economic trajectory and yet another indication the job creation efforts of Governor McDonnell and Republicans in the General Assembly,” said Howell. Speaker Howell Statement Regarding the Passage of Virginia Retirement System Reform

RICHMOND, VA - Following the passage of House Bills 1129 and 1130 and Senate Bills 497 and 498 late Saturday evening, Virginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) issued the following statement commenting on these pivotal reform measures:
"My colleagues and I in the House Republican Caucus were pleased by the passage of Senate Bill 497 and House Bill 1130, which I carried in the House. These landmark reforms will permanently put the Virginia Retirement System on a structurally sound foundation and I can think of no greater ending to a busy and productive legislative session," said Howell. Majority Leader Cox Gives Budget Update

On the House Floor today, Majority Leader Cox gave everyone an update on the progress that has been made on the state budget in the past twenty-four hours. Yesterday afternoon, House budget conferees and members of the Senate Finance Committee met to begin discussions on the differences between the House and Senate budgets.

The Honorable Lacey E. Putney, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee of the Virginia House of Delegates announces that this afternoon, Tuesday, March 6th at 3:00 p.m., members of the House Budget Conference Committee will be meeting with Senator Walter A. Stosch, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, along with other members of the Senate Finance Committee to discuss House Bills 1300 and 1301 (the Budget Bills).
The meeting will be held in the Appropriations Committee Room on the 9th Floor of the General Assembly Building.

At a press conference after the Floor Session, leaders and budget conferees from the House and Senate Republican Caucuses discussed the progress of the 2012-14 biennial budget. Earlier in the day, the House of Delegates passed House Bills 1300 and 1301, the new biennial budget bills. Both bills passed with bipartisan support.
