Gear Resigns from House

Delegate Tom Gear (R-Hampton), resigned, effective today, from the House of Delegates, creating a vacancy in District 91. The Caucus wishes Delegate Gear the best as he continues to deal with Multiple Sclerosis and supports close family members suffering from major illnesses.

Because the General Assembly is not in session, Governor McDonnell has authority to issue a writ of election for a special election in the 91st District. Vacancies occurring when the House is in session are filled in special elections called by the Speaker of the House.

At present, two seats in the House are vacant. The Caucus looks forward to welcoming Greg Habeeb to the House on January 12 after the Special Election in District 8 to fill the vacancy created by Morgan Griffith's election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Caucus stands ready to assist the Republican nominee in the special election called to fill the vacancy caused by Delegate Gear's resignation. Republicans in the 91st District, including portions of Hampton City and York County and the City of Poquoson. The official call for the nomination will be issued by the 91st Legislative District Committee and, once issued, will appear on the RPV website.

Habeeb Nominated to Succeed Griffith in House

Republicans in the City of Salem (City Government, Republican Committee) and parts of Roanoke County (County Government, Republican Committee) have nominated Greg Habeeb to succeed Representative-elect H. Morgan Griffith.

Habeeb will likely face Ginger Mumpower, if as reported in the Salem Times-Register, she is nominated tonight by the local Democrats.

Habeeb, a southwest Virginia native, and attorney with Roanoke-based GentryLocke, has come out swinging with a campaign up and running for the special election, which Gov. McDonnell is expected to call for Jan. 11, 2011, the day before the 2011 session of the General Assembly convenes.

Caucus Plans Hospitality Suite at RPV Advance

Speaker Howell has announced plans for the Caucus to entertain guests at the RPV's 27th Annual Donald W. Huffman Advance in Suite 937 of the McLean Hilton on Friday, November 19, at 9 pm.

On Saturday, November 20, at 4 pm, Caucus Chairman Tim Hugo and Barbara Comstock will join colleagues from the Virginia Senate to provide attendees with a preview of the 2011 General Assembly session.

Griffith to Start NASCAR’s Food City 250 in Bristol

House Majority Leader, Del. Morgan Griffith (R-Salem), has been tapped as honorary starter for the Food City 250 NASCAR Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. NASCAR fans can cheer on their favorite drivers, as well as Griffith in his race for Congress.

Bristol Motor Speedway is the most popular track on the Nationwide Stock Car Series circuit, often drawing over 100,000 fans. And it's one of the fastest short track courses on the circuit.

Check out details of the race at Food City Racing and Bristol Motor Speedway. If you can't make it the Speedway, ESPN will carry the Food City 250 live at 8 p.m. on Friday, August 20.

Ron Villanueva on Governor’s Supplier Diversity Advisory Board

Del. Ron Villanueva (R-Virgiia Beach) will support Governor Bob McDonnell's efforts to increase state contracts with small, woman, and minority-owned businesses as part of the newly-appointed Governor's Supplier Diversity Advisory Board.

In addition to serving in the House, Del. Villanueva is executive vice president at SEK Solutions, a growing small business headquartered in Virginia Beach. He brings private sector and government experience to the work of the advisory board's work in support of expanding jobs and growing the economy.

Danny Marshall Helps Bring Jobs to Southside

Del. Danny Marshall (R-Danville), was featured in The News Leader for his role in bringing jobs to Southside Virginia. Marshall, a member of the Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission (or TICR, as its commonly called), detailed the plans for a National Tire Research Center, which will bring $12M in research and testing expenditures and 183 new jobs to Southside:

One of the Tobacco Commission’s main goals is to bring prosperity back to our region. This is why the commission invested $5 million into a tire research facility that will be located at VIR. The goal is to develop a new passenger tire that will increase car mileage by three to five miles per gallon.

The new center will be located adjacent to the Virginia International Raceway in Halifax County.

Marshall knows something about tires—a former professional race car driver, in both 1999 and 2000, he finished 3rd at the 24 Hours of Daytona Race, the pre-eminent sports car endurance race in the U.S.
