House GOP Efforts on Offshore Oil & Gas Pay Off

The Federal Government removed another barrier to development of Virginia's offshore energy resources today, vindicating efforts led by the House Republican Caucus to enhance Virginia law on exploration and development and to dedicate revenue realized from future development to transportation.

Governor McDonnell traveled to the Center for Innovative Technology in Herndon today to sign key job creation and economic development bills, many of which were carried by Caucus members:

  • Del. Sam Nixon's HB 523, which provides capital gains tax relief for investments in science and biotech startups.
  • Del. Jim LeMunyon's HB 792, which makes relocating to Virginia easier for businesses by providing temporary licenses to employees in regulated professions who already hold the equivalent license in another state.
  • Del. Joe May's HB 677, which established biotech research performance grants to spur development in that field.
  • Del. Barbara Comstock's HB 1372, which enhances the Virginia Economic Development Partnerships stature in the business community.
  • Del. Lacey Putney's HB 1396, which expands the flexibility of the Governor's Economic Development Opportunity Fund to attract major businesses to Virginia.

Today at the Virginia War Memorial, Speaker Bill Howell (R-Stafford) joined caucus members Del. John O'Bannon (R-Henrico), chairman of the War Memorial's board of trustees, and Del. Bill Janis (R-Henrico) at a new conference releasing volume II of Virginians at War, a DVD, produced by the War Memorial. (Check out the Speaker's remarks)

Comstock Leads “Hands Off My Healthcare Rally”

On March 19, President Obama will visit George Mason University to rally support for his health care proposal.

Del. Barbara Comstock (R-McLean) and other GOP leaders will host a "Hands Off My Healthcare Rally" in opposition to the National Health Care Bill, from 8:30 am to 11 am. Check out Delegate Comstock's blog post for details.

Delegate Comstock led the effort of 55 members of the House Republican Caucus sending a letter to the Virginia Congressional Delegation asking them to vote no on the National Health Care Bill.

Republican Successes as 2010 Session Ends

As the House adjourned sine die, Speaker Howell issued a press release on the many legislative successes of the House in the 2010 session.

The State Budget contained many of the key accomplishments of the session, including rejection of former Governor Kaine's 17 percent income tax hike, and a reduction in state spending for the first time in recent memory. In fact, the 2010-2012 Biennial Budget returns general fund spending to 2006 levels.
