Delegate Sam Nixon discusses Unemployment Insurance and federal stimulus with Bearing Drift on podcast.

Republicans in the Virignia House of Delegates overrode one of Governor Kaines vetos which would have forced the state to accept a federal stimilus money that had many strings attached. The money intended to help unemployment insurance would have been very detrimental to small businesses throughout the state. Many local Chambers of Commerce voice their opposition to the Governor's veto.
Many Republicans rose up on the floor of the House of Delegates to speak out against the Governor's amendments.

House Republicans remained focused on legislation geared towards creating jobs, protecting health care and education as well as promoting good energy policy.
The session concluded with completing the reconvene session during which six of Governor Kaine's vetos were overridden.
Republican led legislation will help steer Virginia back towards prosperity.
Speaker Bill Howell had this to say at the end of the session:
“This year, our primary focus has been on approving measures that will expedite Virginia‟s return to prosperity,” noted Speaker Howell. “Today‟s actions again highlighted the commitment of House Republicans to keep Virginia the best state in the nation in which to do business. Moreover, our actions earlier this year to expedite higher education construction projects, accelerate bonding for major transportation initiatives, and direct additional funds for tourism and marketing will aid economic growth sooner and help create more jobs.

Virginia's small business owners--like their colleagues nationwide--create about 70 percent of all new jobs in the state. But now they are struggling in the current economy. Some of these men and women have seen demand for goods and services decline. Others cannot obtain the needed credit to expand and diversify in order to stay competitive.
In such difficult times, we all want an environment that encourages employers to start putting people back to work. Unfortunately, the federal government has passed legislation that entices states to make the cost of doing business even greater.
The federal stimulus bill stipulates that in order to receive a portion of those temporary funds, state governments must permanently increase their unemployment payroll taxes. Will Virginia be lured into making changes that can damage employment long-term?

Kerry Bolognese has filed to enter the race for the 41st District House of Delegates seat. The 41st district represents the Burke-Springfield area of Fairfax County.

Bolognese Files for 41st VA House Seat
SPRINGFIELD, VA (March 24, 2009) – Kerry Bolognese of West Springfield announced today that he has filed all the necessary forms for his candidacy to be official to secure a position on the ballot for the Virginia House of Delegates from the 41st district. “State rules provide that the earliest a candidate can file for a primary for the General Assembly is noon, March 24, and at noon March 24, I filed,” Bolognese said.
Bolognese noted that since announcing his candidacy back in mid-February, he has walked many neighborhoods meeting with people and collecting signatures on the petitions necessary to qualify as a candidate. “The reaction has been very positive and I am very encouraged. People in the Burke-Springfield area simply want common sense solutions to their every day problems,” Bolognese explained.
“I have knocked on hundreds of doors and spoke with many, many concerned citizens. They are worried about their jobs and their futures,” Bolognese said. “We need policies that welcome business development, private investment and economic growth in Virginia. We also need to keep more transportation dollars in Northern Virginia, and to make sure Virginia’s institutions of higher education remain the best in the country and accessible to Northern Virginians. ”
Bolognese has worked for a public higher education association for the past 16 years and has also worked for 13 years on Capitol Hill, 9 of which included service on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, where he specialized in international organizations and international human rights issues.
“I am absolutely committed to this race, which is why I wanted to file as early as possible,” Bolognese concluded.
